Conservation, Diversified Supplies Increase Reliability

Santa Barbara County residents have historically suffered greatly from local droughts.

Drought Teaches a Lesson
Water shortages through the 1970s and 1980s were capped by a brutal drought period ending in 1992. This resulted in a 20-year period of water use restrictions, including rationing and a service moratorium.

This period of drought and restrictions demonstrated that District customers should no longer depend solely on local water supplies, and that efficient water use is important.

Diversified Portfolio of Supplies
The District has diversified its supply with State Project water allowing the groundwater basin to refill, by continuously defending our water rights to local supplies, and by strengthening dams.

The District’s multiple water supplies allow for flexibility. If one supply is reduced, another source is available.

Never Enough to Waste
Conservation is also a key element of good long-term water supply planning. The District participates in a regional water efficiency program that promotes wise use of water by customers and prohibits waste. The program lowers water use, saves money and energy, helps to protect the environment and in many ways leads to healthier, more beautiful landscapes. The District has free literature available on water efficiency, conservation, and maintains a handsome demonstration garden.
