Winter 2001

Montecito built much of its water system in the 1930s. Thus, the system is reaching the end of its useful liife and must be replaced. To maintain the reliability of the water supply system, the District is in the midst of a $13 million system upgrade and replacement program.

One of the largest construction projects is the covering of the 20 million gallon Ortega Reservoir, required by state regulators.

Covering of Ortega Reservoir Moving Ahead
Multi-Million Dollar Project
Tough new water quality standards require that Montecito Water District cover Ortega Reservoir. The reservoir was built in the 1950s to hold water from the South Coast Conduit for use in Montecito, Summerland and Carpinteria. However, because it is uncovered, it collects debris, bird droppings, and other contaminants.

Temporary Fix Installed
To ensure that the water from Ortega Reservoir meets strict
water quality standards, Montecito Water District has intensified its water quality program. Steps include additional testing and disinfection, and the installation of a system of pipes to improve circulation of the water in the reservoir.

Construction Schedule
Construction of the $7 million project is expected to start in late 2001 and be complete by mid 2003. The District, along with its partner in the project Carpinteria Water District, are

seeking a low interest loan fromt the State to help reduce project costs.

Working with Residents
Ortega Reservoir is shielded from the view of most residents. The District has met with residents of Carpinteria, Montecito and Summerland as well as Homeowners’ associations from those areas to keep them informed and obtain input. As the project progresses, the Water District will remain in close contact with interested community members.
