What are drought tolerant plants?

Drought tolerant plants are plants which can survive with very little or no water. Since the Santa Barbara-Montecito areas are semi-arid, the majority of Montecito’s water use is for maintaining plants that are not native to Montecito. Irrigation use accounts for 70% to 80% of the total water use in the District.

In 1988, the Montecito Water District installed a water conservation garden. This garden includes many drought resistant plants, and each is identified with a name sign. This garden has a drip and spray irrigation watering system. There is a path that runs directly through the garden.
