Water Budgets

What is a Water Budget?

Each Water Budget is a property-specific determination of the total water required for efficient use indoors and outdoors, and serves as a tool to guide customers in conservation while maintaining landscaping and the semi-rural atmosphere of the community. Water Budgets help customers understand what “efficient water use” means for their property.

How are Water Budgets Derived?

State standards and the best available data and science are used to calculate efficient indoor water use, based on number of occupants, and efficient outdoor water use based on historic weather conditions and landscaping.

Outdoor budget = Landscape area x Evapotranspiration x landscape factors x gallon conversion (.62)
(indoor budget + outdoor budget)/748 HCF conversion = Monthly water budget An HCF (hundred cubic feet) is equal to 748 gallons and is the unit used to measure your water use

Why have Water Budgets?

Water is a limited resource, impacted by climatic conditions which must be managed to ensure availability and reasonable costs. Any water use exceeding the Water Budget, whether from District supplies, a private well, and/or another source, is recognized as surpassing efficient water use.  Additionally, State regulations limit the amount of water available for use annually by the District.
